As most of you know, Thy is Vietnamese. To celebrate her culture, we have decided to incorporate a few Vietnamese traditions into our wedding celebration.
If you’re wondering where we are registered, we’re actually not registered at any store! This is because in the Vietnamese tradition, only monetary gifts are given to the bride and groom on their wedding day. This is done during the reception and is to symbolize luck and fortune. The gift of money is usually packaged in a “lucky red envelope.” However, in more modern times, the money is given in any color envelope that matches the wedding card that the guest would like to give to the couple!
During the meal, the newlyweds, or at least the bride, customarily changes into traditional Vietnamese clothing before they go around and greet each table. The bride usually changes into a “long dress” known in Vietnamese as an Ao Dai. Each table customarily designates a representative from the table (often the eldest member of the table) to give congratulations and good wishes & to offer wisdom for the new couple. Toasts are often made and guests present the newlyweds with the gift envelops at this time.
